Privacy Policy
Jasmine Weather has no advertising and no analytics trackers, and we do not sell your data or share it for advertising. The app has no account and no sign-in. To show forecasts, current conditions and the map, it sends the coordinates of the places you view to the National Weather Service and to our servers. This page lists exactly what leaves your device and why.
Who we are
Jasmine Weather is published by Geosmin LLC, United States. Contact: [email protected], or [email protected] for questions about your data.
Data stored on your device
Your saved locations, plans and rules, units and theme preferences, and cached weather data are stored on your device. Uninstalling the app deletes them. We keep no copy.
No identifier, no account
The app does not create an account, ask for an email address, or send us a device identifier, advertising identifier or phone number. Our servers cannot tell one installation from another except by the network address a request arrives from.
Location
If you grant location permission, the app uses your position to find the forecast and centre the map for where you are. Location access is optional: you can add places by name or postal code instead. Postal code lookup uses a database bundled inside the app, so it happens offline. An approximate location is enough for the app to work.
Location permission is not what decides whether coordinates leave your device. Every place the app shows, whether it follows your GPS or is a place you added, is looked up by its coordinates, as listed next.
What is sent when you view a place
Coordinates are sent as decimal degrees with four decimal places, about 10 metres. For your GPS place that is your position.
- Forecast. The app asks the National Weather Service (api.weather.gov) for the forecast at each place’s coordinates. NWS also sees your IP address and handles it under its own policies.
- Current conditions, observation history and rain/lightning at the spot. For each place on screen, the app sends the same coordinates to Geosmin’s servers (wx.geosmin.day) about once a minute for current conditions, about every 15 minutes for the analysed temperature estimate, and when it draws the day’s observed temperatures. Our servers use the coordinates to find the nearest weather station and any active alerts, by asking the National Weather Service themselves, so NWS also receives these coordinates from our servers (not your IP address). They are held in memory only while answering, with cached results kept per area of about one square kilometre, and are not written to our logs or stored.
- Map and radar. The app requests map tiles and radar images from Geosmin’s servers. A request identifies the map tile or radar site, which is the general area you are viewing at that zoom level, not your precise position. If our radar servers are unreachable, the app fetches radar tiles directly from NOAA (opengeo.ncep.noaa.gov) in the same way.
- Lightning. While the map is open, the app asks our servers for recent lightning in the area on screen, and sends the map’s visible bounding box to do so. If the map is centred on a place or on your location, that box identifies that place precisely. These requests are not written to our logs.
- Reading a radar value. If you press and hold a point on the radar map, that point is sent to our radar server to read the value and, where relevant, NOAA coverage details. Our logs record these requests without their coordinates.
- Start-up check. When it opens, the app reads a small configuration file from our servers (a service notice and the latest version number). It sends nothing about you beyond the request itself.
- Storm tracks. The app reads a storm advisory file from our servers. The request carries no location.
- Links you tap. Opening an alert’s National Weather Service page or the Play Store update link opens your browser at that site. The NWS page address includes the place’s forecast-zone code and its position rounded to about 1 kilometre.
Calendar
If you enable calendar plans and grant calendar permission, the app creates and updates its own events in the calendar you choose. It reads only the events it created. Calendar data never leaves your device.
Server logs
When the app talks to Geosmin’s servers, our servers record standard connection information for map tiles, radar imagery and the start-up check: IP address, request path, timestamp, and app user agent. Requests that carry your coordinates are not recorded: current conditions, observation history and lightning requests are not logged at all, and radar value lookups are logged without their coordinates. We use logs solely to keep the service running, to protect it against abuse, and to diagnose faults. They are not linked to any account (the app has none) and are kept only as long as needed for those purposes.
Our servers and this website are delivered through Cloudflare, which handles each request, including the address requested and your IP address, as our service provider under its own privacy policy, and may keep its own records of it.
Third-party services
The app connects to the following services. Each processes requests under its own policies.
- NOAA / National Weather Service (api.weather.gov and related NOAA endpoints) for forecasts, alerts and radar source data, as described above.
- Geosmin servers (wx.geosmin.day and related hostnames) for map tiles, radar imagery, current conditions, lightning and the start-up check, delivered through Cloudflare.
- Google Play or the Apple App Store, which you used to install the app, only if you tap an update link.
The app contains no advertising SDKs and no third-party analytics SDKs. The store you install from (Google Play or the Apple App Store) may collect crash and diagnostic information under its own policies and your device settings. This website sets no cookies and loads no analytics scripts.
Children
Jasmine Weather is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Your choices
You can revoke location and calendar permissions at any time in your device settings, and remove any place from the app. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data. Because the app has no account and sends us no identifier, we hold no profile about you on our servers; the only server-side records are the logs described above. To ask about data held on our servers, email [email protected].
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated effective date.
